Martha Bassett joins the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players for a jazz concert of some of the most beloved songs by George and Ira Gershwin, including Our Love Is Here To Stay, Lady Be Good, Strike Up The Band, Embraceable You, I Got Rhythm, and Someone To Watch Over Me. Pianist Ruskin Cooper and violinist Jacqui Carrasco perform an all-Gershwin program including Rhapsody in Blue, Three Preludes, Rialto Ripples, and selections from "Porgy and Bess." Thursday, August 21, 2008, 7:30 p.m. Jon Kuhn Gallery Week two of the Festival begins with the exotic colors of French chamber music surrounded by Jon Kuhn's shimmering glass sculptures. Mary Siebert, mezzo soprano, joins the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players for performances of Chansons madecasses by Ravel, Three Watercolors by Gaubert, and the Piano Quartet in c minor, Op. 15 by Faure. Carolina Scrapbook : a Family Concert Saturday August 23, 2008, 11:00 a.m. Gray Auditorium, Old Salem Visitors Center A multi-meda musical journey through the history of North Carolina-- the Colonial era, the Civil War, turn of the 20th century and up to the present day. Projected images of the Tarheel State are accompanied by the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players performing musical selections. Our narrator will engage the audience in a Q & A quiz: "North Carolina, Land of Firsts." Music in Revolutionary Salem Sunday, August 24, 2008, 3:00 p.m. Gray Auditorium, Old Salem Visitors Center This concert is a glimpse into the musical life of the Moravian town of Salem in the period during the American Revolutionary War. Rarely heard gems from the vault at the Moravian Music Archives include works for strings and harpsichord, a set of sacred songs, and a patriotic medley including “Variations on Yankee Doodle” and the “George Washington March”. Marilyn Taylor, soprano, and Susan Bates, organ and harpsichord join the Carolina Chamber Symphony Players. Introductory remarks by Philip Dunigan. Festival Finale Sunday, August 31, 2008, 3:00 p.m. Gray Auditorium, Old Salem Visitors Center The Inaugural Festival's final concert includes the playful “Serenata in vano” by Carl Nielsen, Beethoven’s Serenade for Flute, Violin and Viola, Op. 25, and his Septet in E-Flat, Op. 20, one of the most popular compositions during his lifetime.
